To Jesus Through Mary
The rosary can be a powerful prayer to Jesus, through His mother, Mary. It is a meditative prayer that begins with the recitation of the Apostle’s Creed, an Our Father, three Hail Mary’s and a Glory Be. Then there are five decades which each begin and end with an Our Father and Glory Be, and have ten Hail Mary’s in between. When you pray the rosary, you meditate on the events in Jesus’ life. There are the joyful, luminous, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries. You can pray the rosary in 10-15 minutes.
The structure of the rosary, with it’s well-known, repetitious prayer can help you avoid distraction and give you the space to meditate on significant moments in Jesus’ life and our salvation history. Even though specific prayers of the rosary ask for Mary’s intercession, the prayer as a whole is all about Jesus.

5 Ways to Get Started Praying the Rosary
When we don’t know something or lack the confidence related to it, we don’t practice it. Don’t let that stop you from giving it a try! If you want to pray the Rosary every day but aren’t exactly sure how to start, these ideas might spark some motivation.
Start with One Decade
Don’t worry about “doing it right.” Just pick one mystery and pray 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and 1 Glory Be while thinking about and meditating on that moment in Jesus’ life. Once you get comfortable meditating on one decade, you can move on to add more.
Pray in the Car
Because it only takes 10-15 minutes and it is repetitive, the rosary can be a great prayer for while you are driving. Keep a set of rosary beads in your car to help remind you. You can also use audio versions to help you keep track of the different sets of mysteries.
Walk / Jog / Run and Pray
Some people pray the rosary as they walk as part of a moving meditation. Plus, you’re getting some exercise.
Sing the Prayers
There are several melodies for singing the Lord’s Prayer, and a beautiful melody for the Hail Mary can be found at the beginning of the hymn “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” by Carey Landry. Singing slows down the prayers, so it might take you a little longer this way.
Pray with Intentions & Thank You’s
Dedicate each decade with a special intention. Before you say the Our Father for each decade, think of one specific prayer intention you’d like to say those prayers for. Or try giving God thanks for something with every Hail Mary.
